no many of those flights are from the other airports but the direct flights mainly use smaller jets like Hainan for example uses 737s to fly that route

Er, what? The gate costs are lower per demand at small airports, arent they? That is, youll pay say 4x the price for a gate at LHR than at a smaller airport, but you wont get 4x the demand. In any case, gate costs are pretty negligible, at least outside the most expensive airports. Youre always better to spend 10k extra per month on gates when it means making 100k a _week_ more profit.

Connexting PAX require a hub of your airline or your alliance to connect through. if your flight does not fly to a hub, and/or the hub doesnt have any other destinaitons, your PAX cant connect. Connecting pax generate half the ticket revenue of direct pax, but 100 IFS revenue. Connecting pax is most useful when trying to fill flights with lots of competition.
